Activities

We find that the children do a lot better when they have fun activities to do. Crafts are a good way to get the family together and everyone can have fun. It is also a way to cure boredom at the campsite. If you are looking for fun things to do with your children, check in here from time to time.

Rock Art Center: Phoenix, AZ

Looking for something to do with your kids on the weekend or during spring break that won't break the bank? Why not try the Deer Valley Rock Art Center in Northwest Phoenix. $7 for adults and $3 for children 5-12. There is an impressive indoor display with history regarding petroglyphs and the petroglyphs on the property. Step out side and see hundreds of petroglyphs on the rocks right behind the welcome center. Get the scavenger hunt for the kids, and if they find all the symbols they get a prize. A good outing and a hands on way for kids to learn. The entire center only takes about an hour to go through.

Look closely and you will see hundreds of symbols carved into the rocks.

As you walk around, it is hard to believe you are in the 5ht largest city in the country. A great way to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours and a fun way to learn some history.

There comes a time when a a quick baby wipe wipe down will no longer do it while you are out in the bush. This has happend to us, so thanks to our good friend Rex, we have come up with a great solution so we can take showers while camping and not pay an arm and a leg. And these are not cold showers either, these are showers as hot as you want them. And the best part, you can pick up all the stuff you need at your local Home Depot and assemble it with minimal tools in your living room. All in about 5 minutes.

Camp Shower:

This is really easy to do and you can even have the kids help if you want.

You are going to need a bug sprayer (this one has a two gallon capacity), a kitchen sink sprayer, 1/2" x 1/4" x 10' braided vinyl tubing (this is for extra length), teflon tape, one 1/4" barb, one 1/4" barb x 1/4" MIP, and a sharp knife.

Photobucket
First, cut the spray nozzle off the spray bottle hose (a very sharp knife makes this an easy task, but don't let the kids do this part).

Photobucket
Take the 1/4" barb.

Photobucket
Insert the barb into the cut end of the bottle hose.

Photobucket
Take the 1/2" x 1/4" x 10' hose and attach it to the other end of the barb.

Photobucket
You now have a much longer hose to work with.

Photobucket
Now, take the kitchen sink sprayer and the 1/4" barb x 1/4" MIP.

Photobucket
Cover the threaded MIP end with one wrap of teflon tape.

Photobucket
Thread the MIP end into the end of the kitchen sink sprayer hose.

Photobucket
Insert the barb end into the open end of the 1/2" x 1/4" x 10' hose.

You now have a shower. Fill the bottle with water, pressurize, and you can take a shower. For the best results, we fill the bottle with half room temperature water and fill the rest with hot water we heated on the stove. Nice hot shower! For privacy, we bought a shower tent for about $35. Also, you can use the shower for doing dishes at camp too. It works great and makes dishes 100 times easier.
